Instagram Freeze? Who Cares?
This past week the internet informed us that some entertainers (I try to avoid using the word “celebrity” because it makes them sound more important than they are) decided to do a 24 hour Instagram freeze in protest to Facebook’s supposed failure to stop hate and political misinformation on it’s site. (Facebook is Instagram’s owner).
I had to laugh out loud at that. Grant you, I don’t have any social media accounts. None. So this doesn’t affect me at all, one way or another. But, I had to wonder, what exactly was supposed to happen when these people didn’t post the latest photo of themselves for a day? Was the earth going to stop turning? The sun stop shining? People go crazy in the streets (like there isn’t already enough of them doing that)? What? Do these people really believe that their photo’s are that important to the world? Seriously?
It got even funnier.
To make the situation even funnier, the site I was on at the time had another article listed under the “Entertainer Instagram Freeze” article. It was called, “Narcissism: thinking you are more important than you are”. I wonder if that was a coincidence? If it was, it was a perfect one!
Tired of this nonsense.
Anyway, back to this latest entertainer nonsense. I don’t know about you, but I’m sick of these people always trying to tell someone what to do and how to think. Just like all the sports players pushing BLM. If a person supports or doesn’t support BLM or any other organization/cause, they need to do so because they have done their research and feel it is the right thing to support or not support. No one in their right mind should be making a decision like that based on what an entertainer (this includes sports people) think or do.
Same goes with voting. Every election year, here come the rich entertainers to tell you who you should vote for. Apparently, being an actor, musician or child’s game player automatically makes you qualified to tell your audience how to think and what to do. It makes you an expert on everything, apparently. I’m not sure how that works because, frankly, most of these people can’t get a handle on their own behavior and resulting lives. This group has lots of money but they also have high marriage and divorce rates and high incidents of addictions, overdoses and suicides, not to mention just plain bad behavior that often gets then in trouble/arrested. Why do people like that think they have a right, even a duty, to use their so called “platform” to tell everyone else what to do?
The last people I would go to for advice.
Personally, these out of touch people are the last people I would go to for advice on anything unless I wanted the name of a drug dealer, a divorce lawyer or a plastic surgeon who would be willing to do anything to me that I paid him to do, no matter how bad I ended up looking. I don’t even want their advice on how to become successful in the entertainment business because, as we are hearing more and more, many of these people got where they are by less than honorable methods. So why do they think they are so smart and so important?
Society caused this problem.
Well, maybe it’s because we have treated them that way. Why does society kiss up to people like this? Why are they given special privileges? Why are they on all these talk shows being ask what they think about things that have nothing to do with their jobs? How did people who do nothing more than act, play music or play child’s games get on such a high pedestal.
Because we, as a society, put them there.
First, I think people tend to worship money. Generally speaking, people want to be rich. Having grown up poor, I can understand not wanting to go hungry and struggle to have the basics. Most of us would at least like to be in a position where we had a decent roof over our heads, food in the fridge and are able to pay our bills with a bit left over to have some fun (see a movie, buy a book, take a trip, etc). For some, that is not enough. They want to live what they think is the good life. They want big houses, designer clothing and expensive cars. Since these entertainers are way over paid for what they do, they live that kind of life, so they are looked up to by people who want what they have. I believe some people think if they emulate these rich folks, they will one day have that life too. They won’t, but it makes them happy to think they will.
Of course, these people ignore the fact that being rich does not make you happy. As I mentioned above, these entertainers have an about average problem with mental health and addictions. If money makes a person happy, why are so many of them so troubled? After all, they can buy anything they want, go anywhere they want, have the best of everything and have people admire them. If that leads to happiness, why are they so unhappy and so messed up?
Teens get a pass.
I’m going to briefly address the normal teenage tendency to worship entertainers . The teen mind is a subject worthy of a study all of its own, but lets just say that many, if not most, of us go through a period of idol worship of entertainers. We long to look like this person, date someone like that person, play a guitar like this guy, have hair like that girl, have the money and freedom to do as we please, and be loved and admired. To a degree that is normal for a young developing mind that is trying to figure out who it is and what it wants to be, so I’m not going to hit on that group too hard.
Adults need to grow up.
Problem is, there are adults…full grown adults…who are still doing it. They still hang on to every post their favorite entertainer makes on social media. They try to act like them, dress like them, they buy their products and try desperately to get them to respond to them personally because, some how, that will make them feel important. Some even have the delusion that they are this person’s friend just because they follow them and get to comment on their posts. Frankly, it’s sad and rather scary. What is normal for a teenager is not normal for an adult who should have figured out a few things about themselves buy now and be out living their lives.
Think they are special and that you are stupid.
These entertainers think they are special and important because there are mentally/emotionally ill or delayed people out there who are treating them like they are. The result? What you see right now. These entertainers think that every thought they have, every move they make, needs to be broadcast to the world and the world should respond positively. They post photos of their plastic and surgically altered bodies, slathered in makeup and photo shopped, and their public goes crazy with adoration. No wonder they think we are all so stupid that they need us to tell us how to think and act. Anyone that worships these people probably DOES need told what to do because they are obviously failing at life on some very important level. When you have nothing better to do than worship actors, musicians and game players, that says something very sad about you and your life.
One benefit of the COVID lockdown.
As I write this, we are still dealing with the COVID-19 issue. Though we are over the total lockdown that many of us went through, people have not returned to their normal lives in many ways, some good, some not. One good way is related to entertainment. With no sports being played, no movies being made, etc. during the lockdown, people had to go and find some other way to entertain themselves. Some picked up their own instrument and started playing, some went out and got involved in a sport or physical activity, some started writing, reading, crafting, painting…you name it. When things started getting a bit closer to normal: sports are being played and shown on TV..that type of thing, many people didn’t stop what they are doing to go back to being a passive observer. They kept on with their new pursuits.
No one want to hear it.
If that weren’t enough, the entertainers put the final nail in the coffin: they started pushing politics down people’s throats. These people are too out of touch and self-centered to understand that people turn to entertainment to get away from the problems in the world, not hear more about them AND be insulted at the same time. That ignorance on the part of the entertainers really did it. People left their old past times in droves and still are. They are waking up to the fact that these over paid, catered to people have no clue how the rest of us live. They look down on us, treat us like we’re stupid and try to lead us along by the nose. Many folks have had enough and they’ve walked away, and I think that is a wonderful thing!
Let’s get spiritual.
Now, lets get spiritual for a minute. There are other reasons we shouldn’t be looking up to or worshiping these people For one, God says we are to worship no one but Him.
You shall have no other gods before me. Exodus 20:3
We are not to look to other people to meet our needs or give us self-esteem. God made us as individuals. You are to be YOU, not some lame copy of some other person. Besides, these people have many, many problems of their own. They are not people to be looked up to for answers on how to live a good life. Only God can tell you how to do that.
It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in humans. Psalm 118:8
Stop trusting in mere humans, who have but a breath in their nostrils. Why hold them in esteem? Isiah 2:22
In fact, living like these people is strongly discouraged in the Bible. Let’s face it, they tend to live rather immoral lives in many ways and that is not something to want to imitate. Even their lusts for money and attention are signs that their thinking is not good or correct. God discourages that kind of behavior because He knows it is not good for us and doesn’t lead to happiness.
Do not wear yourself out to get rich; do not trust your own cleverness. Proverbs 23:4
Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions”. Luke 12:15
Whoever loves money never has enough;whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. Ecclesiastes 5:15
Those who trust in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf. Proverbs 11:28
And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. Ecclesiastes 4:4
What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? Matthew 16:26
I could list many more verses on that, but you get the picture.
The point is, we are not to be looking to another faulty human being for instruction on how to think, act and live, especially those who are living evil, often perverted, lives. God gives us what we need to know to live a good life. It’s all written in the Bible.
As I said above, we are not to get our sense of worth from other people either. God created each one of us just as we are because that is how He wanted us. He wanted a son or daughter exactly like you, so He made you, and He loves you. You don’t have to look to other people for validation.
Get your thinking in line with God’s and you will know that He doesn’t want people imitating sinful entertainers. He doesn’t want people starving themselves to be skinny, spending their time over exercising so they can have a six pack abdomen, going under the knife to change their appearance to look totally unnatrual and grotesque, lusting after and fornicating with lover after lover, seeking attention and validation from other people while wasting precious time following and worshiping them on social media. He has left instructions on how to live a good life right there in the Bible. He also tells you how much He loves you in the Bible. Read it and pray for His guidance, then make decisions based on what He tells you, not on what some arrogant and confused entertainer tells you. Those people can’t tell you how to live a good life because they don’t know how to do it themselves!
The only real solution.
You can’t fix the twisted minds of entertainers, but you can work on your own thinking. If you are going to get down on a knee, make it both knees…and worship the God that made you, not some person, cause, or man made ideology. Ask Him how to live right and ask Him to fix the problems in this world, because He is the only One that has the answers and the power to fix them. Stop worshiping those who don’t deserve it and start worshiping the only One that does. Then you will finally be living a life worth living.
