Life is NOT out of control.

Interesting times

I have to admit, this is an interesting time to start a blog/website. It certainly can’t be said that there is any lack of subjects a person could write about. One glance at any news source will give you enough material to keep you writing for months!

Tempted to jump in the fray.

I have to admit, I was tempted. I was tempted to talk about COVID19 and all the resulting problems and inconveniences. I was tempted to write about the police, George Floyd, Martin Gugino (the 75 year old white man pushed by police, resulting in a serious injury) and David Dorn (the black retired police officer shot by a black looter), Antifa, BLM, protesters, rioters, looters. Lies, pride, ego, exaggerations, race baiting, manipulation, assumptions, delusions, mob mentality, anger, selfishness, agendas, bandwagons, politics, drugs, criminal behavior… Like I said, I could write for months about all this stuff. Stuff that is making many of us feel like life is out of control.

But I won’t. And it’s not.

Fear and Anger

You see, all this drama is enough to cause fear and anger in anyone who doesn’t know there is someone in control of all of this. It’s enough to make the average person feel vulnerable, manipulated, and threatened, putting them on the defensive. When people are on the defensive, they are often angry and irrational. It gets ugly, very quickly and we are seeing that on all sides right now.

There is Someone in control.

Thing is, there is Someone in control. He is frequently referred to as God.

None of what is happening has taken God by surprise. He knew it was going to happen. In fact, it was all part of His plan. Does that upset you? Does it sound ridiculous that a good and loving God would allow all of this to go on as part of His plan? Well, you will have to go to Him with your questions and complaints. I, a mere human, cannot presume to understand why God does what He does, so I can’t answer for Him. As He says, His ways and thoughts are higher than ours and we can’t understand them. (Isaiah 55:8-9, Romans 11:33). The only thing I can do is show you a small part of what He has revealed about Himself in the Bible as pertains to our discussion.

Some facts about God.

First, the Bible says that God is omniscient. He knows everything. And everything means just that, everything. Nothing happens that He is not aware of. Not only does He know what is happening, and why (something humans think they know, but don’t), but He also knows it is going to happen before it happens.

He is also omnipresent. He is everywhere. No one and nothing can hide from His sight. He sees all.

Lets look at a few verses:

For whenever out heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart and He knows everything. (1 John 3:20)

For He looks to the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens. (Job 28:24)

Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. (Psalm 139:4)

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs on your head are all numbered. (Matthew 10:29-30)

For His eyes are on the ways of man, and He sees all his steps. (Job 34:21)

I could list many more, but you get the idea. You can look up more on your own if you choose to study more deeply. These verses suffice to show us that nothing happens without God knowing about it before it even happens.

Lets look at a couple more characteristics of God that are listed in the Bible.

God is sovereign and omnipotent. In other words, He is the supreme ruler. There is no one above Him. He answers to no one (and that includes you and I). The buck stops with Him.

He is also all powerful. No one can stop Him from doing what He wills to do. He is in complete and total control.

So, from that we can deduce that, not only does He know everything that is going to happen before it happens, but He can stop it from happening if He so chooses to. If it is not part of His plan, He will stop it. If it is part of His plan, no one can prevent it from happening.

Arrogant, Ignorant Humans.

This doesn’t sit well with many people. We puny, arrogant, ignorant, self-absorbed people like to think that we are in control. We don’t like the idea that God is controlling everything that happens or doesn’t happen. We think we run our own lives (or at least we want to), or some think that satan is running everything, while God just sits up in heaven wringing His hands because so much is happening that He doesn’t want to happen.

That is foolish and disrespectful to God! God is in full control. No one prevents Him from fulfilling what He has planned. Not satan, not politicians, criminals or religious people. Not you and not me. God and God alone is in control of everything in creation.

Lets look at some verses:

I declare the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, “My Counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose. I have spoken and I will bring it to pass, I have proposed and I will do it”. (Isaiah 46:10)

The Kings heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord;He turns it wherever He will. (Proverbs 21:1)

The Lord brings the counsel of nations to nothing, He frustrates the plans of peoples. The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of His heart to all generations. (Psalm 33:10-11)

And that is just a small sample of verses showing that God is in complete control. All the time. Always.

We are still responsible for what we do.

I do want to mention here, that, even though God is in complete control, we are still responsible for our choices because God does not cause people to sin. We do that willingly on our own, especially if we have an unrepentent, carnal heart/mind.

When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me”, for God cannot be tempted by evil nor does He tempt anyone. (James 1:13)

God does not need to cause people to do something wrong or evil. People do that because it comes naturally to them. At heart, people are selfish, greedy, evil beings. You don’t have to believe me, lets look at what God says about it in the Bible.

...the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. Who can understand it? (Jeremiah 17:9)

For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery (Mark 7:21)

As you have read, people sin willingly, all on their own. They get themselves and others into all kinds of trouble because they are rotten to the core. God does not force them to sin in order to fulfill His plan. He merely withholds His restraining hand and allows the action to happen. So, though God is in complete control, He is not responsible for people’s evil behavior. They are.

Why doesn’t God stop the evil?

Usually about here, people ask the question, “Why? If God is in complete control, why doesn’t He stop all the evil..all the bad stuff that happens to people?”

Folks, that is a question only God can answer in full, though the Bible does give a few hints. I will cover this involved subject in another post. For now, I will say that the Bible states that God is making man into the image of His son, Jesus Christ (Romans 8:29). In order for us to get there, like Christ, we have to suffer.(Romans 8:18) I believe that is the main reason He allows so much suffering here on earth. Churches don’t talk about that much, if at all. It’s unpleasant and people don’t want to hear unpleasant things. Problem is, it is still the truth. We have to suffer in order to become like Jesus.

I also believe He has to allow people to see and experience what their evil ways produce. We humans learn the hard way and have to suffer consequences to fully learn our lessons it would seem.

God does what is necessary and good.

God doesn’t like to see people suffer but He knows it is necessary. He is looking at the big picture and knows what glorious futures people have, so He does what needs done even though it is painful to see. He has to do what it takes to get us conformed to the image of Jesus. He has to purge us of our evil natures…and that requires the Holy Spirit, and suffering.

Is God cruel?

Is God cruel for not stopping all the insanity? No, God loves us. All of us. He IS love, after all. No one loves more that He does. He loves us all perfectly and is working things out for our ultimate good. It may not seem like it at times, but He it is true.

…For God is Love. (1 John 4:8)

Gracious is the Lord and righteous; yes, our God is merciful. (Psalm 116:5)

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purposes. (Romans 8:25)

He is in total control.

God is good. He is all knowing, all powerful, loving and merciful. And He is in total control. COVID isn’t in control. Politicians aren’t in control. The few rogue police officers, the many rioters and looters are not in control. God is in control. Nothing can happen to His children that He hasn’t ordained for good. Because of that, and in spite of the appearance of a world out of control and in spite all the wicked, violent, selfish people striving for control, we can go about our day free from fear and anger. We don’t have to worry. We are safe in the hands of an Almighty Love Who is in complete control of everything. The heathen will rage and spread their evil poison, but God has the final say.

Everything is under His control.
